Who is Dietrich Bonhoeffer?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian born in 1906.  He was one of the few church leaders who stood against the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler.  In 1935 he was called to direct an illegal Church Training College that stood apart from the German Christians who supported Hitler.  It was here that he studied for and taught the lectures that would become the book The Cost of Discipleship.  As WWII progressed, he became involved in the German resistance movement.  In 1943 he was arrested for participating in a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler.  During his imprisonment he continued to write and provide spiritual guidance for his fellow prisoners.  He was executed shortly before the end of the war in April 1945.  He would become one of the most renowned Christian thinkers of the 20th Century.
